Rubber Roof Repair Tips

How to Repair a Rubber EPDM Roof

If you want a few helpful rubber roof repair tips for your EPDM roofing system, then you have come to the right place. EPDM roofing is a synthetic rubber and should never be paired with any type of asphalt product. You should never use roof cement flashing and asphalt-based roof coating, which also includes an aluminum roof coating. As these will contaminate the EPDM rubber membrane, resulting in a more extensive and expensive repair.

Make sure to have your roof cleaned and inspected periodically to check on the roof coating. If you need to reseal it, it may need a special fabric applied, a base coat, and an elastomeric coating. Or you could use a peel-and-stick roofing patch that is made of EPDM material. If you need an adhesive, always use a product called “an EDPM rubber roofing adhesive.”

What is an EPDM Rubber Roof?

EPDM is short for ethylene propylene diene terpolymer and is an extremely durable synthetic rubber roofing membrane that is typically used for flat roofing or low-pitched roofing. Its main ingredients come from oil and natural gas.

Patching EPDM Roofs

Patching materials are sold as either membrane materials that require separate adhesive or pressure-sensitive materials that have the adhesive already applied to the underside of the membrane. Patching materials can also be found in kits that include primer, cleaner, and roller for bonding the patch. These kits are expensive; however, they have enough material to make multiple repairs. Other coatings such as liquid rubber, liquid butyl, and rubber sealants can also patch and waterproof spots that have sprouted a leak.

Common problems with EDPM roofs.

Problems with EDPM roofs range from punctures or membrane damage to substandard installation, failing seams, and shrinkage.

When To replace an EDPM roof?

This type of roof has a lifespan spanning between 20 – 25 years, depending on whether it is regularly inspected and maintained.
